Query: Which one I should go for; Masters in Boitech or in Biochem? My friend has done her B.Sc. with Botany, Zoology and Chemistry. She hasn’t worked as an internee in any hospital or any clinic. She is confused about what to opt for. Somebody suggested her to do Masters in Biotech or Biochem. She got highest marks in Botany and she likes Chemistry. Kindly also inform me about the dates of admission in these fields and also which universities are offering these courses?

Advisors replies

Shaista Khanum

Students of Botany, Chemistry and Zoology have very high scope in both Biochemistry and Biotechnology. But those who like to work with chemicals can go for Biochemistry but those who can use living organisms in Laboratory and industry for different experiments can go for Biotechnology.

Seeing the highest marks subject and interests of your friend I would say that she should apply in Plant Biotechnology which is accelerating in Pakistan more. Since, Pakistan is an Agricultural country so most of the investment in Research fields is done for Crop Biotechnology. PCSIR is one of the most popular an old Pakistani Government Institute which support Plant Biotech. Regarding Biochemistry she can apply for the admission and the rest is her luck. For the Universities which are offering these two degree programs, please see the websites of individual universities from the List of Pakistani Universities document in File section on the top of this page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CareerCounselingPortalPakistan/325602527529198/

Query: My brother gave the exam of 2nd year (pre-med) and attempted the ETEA test in Peshawar but failed. So what would you people suggest for him? Pharm-D? MBBS from China? Private Medical College in Pakistan? Your suggestions please. His ETEA 232 /800 and in F.Sc. (1) 360/550 = 65%

Rabia Ahmed

If you can afford private MBBS then CMH & SHEIKH ZAID MEDICAL COLLEGE are the best secondly B.Sc. Honors from KING EDWARD MEDICAL COLLEGE. Then there is Pharm.D.

Your brother has to stay in hostels if you people are going to send him to any med. college outside your hometown. Secondly expenditure of hostel, every college has its own fee structure for example that of Army Medical College or CMH. If your brother will be lucky enough to get admission then besides medical studies he can enjoy military services too.

Omer Yousaf

If your brother failed in ETEA or has less marks in F.Sc. .Try getting admission in Sindh colleges.  Private colleges in Punjab don’t accept students with very less marks in ETEA. Please send the marks of F.Sc. Matric and ETEA for better suggestions. You need to focus and shortlist 5-6 private colleges rather going for all options available.

You have to be very careful in selecting the new colleges, they should be recognized by PMDC and relevant university and have all the required faculty and infrastructure (Visit the university first).

My suggestion is your first priority should be MBBS then BDS then Physiotherapy.  You can contact Muhammad Medical College (www.mmc.edu.pk) or Hashmat Medical College (www.hmdc.edu.pk). If you apply now, the chances are high. They also have offices in Islamabad.

Query: I am final year MBBS student but confused in what field to go after MBBS and also confused should I remain in Pakistan or go abroad. I am confused to go towards medicine side or surgery side. Dear Saleh Afridi there are many avenues after MBBS to proceed. Can you please tell about your favorite fields for Medicine? Please also describe about your financial strength regarding Medicine career.

All the fields which you have mentioned of your interests have value. But you know medicine field itself is an expensive deal for an average financial person. But that doesn’t mean he/she should not try. I suggest that after finishing your house job you should join some hospital and start practical life first. Once you are in touch with practice you will be closer to see the difference between Medicine and Surgery for your interest. You could easily evaluate yourself for the best out of these two. Once you get experience and some financial savings then you must start FRCS or FCPS for specialization your field of interest. After MBBS a GP job is mostly given all over the world including Pakistan. If you find is easy to work in Pakistan then good otherwise try to find the same position with same requirements abroad. It may help you save more in less time for your specialization.

You must also know which countries pay the most handsome salary to GP’s and what criterion they set for them. If you meet their criterion you should try to join them. The best earning countries for GP’s can be Goggled as per your requirements.

 Malik Nawaz

Dear Saleh Afridi I think you must go for your house job first of all in this way you can also earn some money for your specialization and you can also apply for the loan where you can get money for your specialization and also you should join such field after MBBS that attract you more and you also have interest for it.

Saina Siddiqui

Saleh Afridi it is best that you should go for specialization in any field which interests you the most. If you have interest in Cardiology you must join as it have good scope (both abroad and Pakistan). If your finances are not permitting you then you can look for opportunities in Pakistan. Keep your aims high, finances can be arranged with little effort as Malik Nawaz suggested.

Saina Siddiqui:

Well Pharm D, health sciences and medical lab technology has a lot of scope. Please check the relevant required course before selecting the school you are taking admission. Also check admission requirements beforehand and select the subject in which you have interest. Do extensive research to find the future scope of that subject in Pakistan or abroad.

Shaista Khanum

It is up to the aptitude of the student and his/her future aims. Pharm D, and medical lab tech mostly works in Pakistan but all over the world The Medical Support sciences like Physiotherapy, MIT, Optometry, Emergency & ICU, OT, SLP, RT and all mentioned above have a great demand. The good thing is these are Hons Degrees now which makes the person a professional level to enter the job field directly. Therefore I recommend Medical students to see all these Medical Support Sciences fields more. Biotechnology is the fastest Basic/Health Science field which is also highly demanding all over the world So please explore all of them.

Here are few more suggestions for the field of Medicine. Since, you are already in MBBS so you must know very clearly the significance of MBBS and further specializations like FRCS and FCPS. MBBS is Bachelor degree of Medicine and it gives you the maximum post of GP (General Physician) in Practical units of Medicines like hospital, clinics etc. FRCS and FCPS moves you to specializations in A Big Variety of Fields of Medicine like, Gynecology, Opthiomoloy, Pediatrics, Nephrology, Urology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Cardiology etc. etc. Based upon your personal interests you can continue your specializations in any of these fields. Along with this, Medicines also have offshoots attached to other Field of Studies like Forensic Medicines, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Alternative Medicines etc. etc. Depending upon resource availability, personal interests and global demands, I would suggest you to opt for any of specialization field along with your general practice in hospitals or clinics. Don’t forget to see the Trends of Medicines in Other Regions/Cultures/Countries of the world to upgrade your skills with the pace of time. Best of Luck!

Information on BDS

Query Statement: Assamualikum,  I am a student, right now, having a summer break of 3 months. I had take  AS exams and want to know about medical colleges (for BDS) in Pakistan. I will be applying once I am done with my A levels. I am in UAE (Abu Dhabi). So which one should I appear for, as in TOFL, SAT etc.? Please guide me. Thank you

Advisors Replies

Laila Ghulam Ali

Dear student for MBBS or BDS you need to pass MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). Admissions are in process at all universities.

Omer Yousaf

Dear Student, if you want to appear as an overseas student then you should appear in SAT II test and if you intended to appear as a normal student (on open merit seat) you can appear either on SAT II or in MCAT.

In Punjab, it is organized by UHS (University of Health Sciences) and for year 2012, it is expected to be held on 15 Sep and in KPK it is organized by ETEA and is expected to be held in last week of August.

There is no need for TOEFL as your medium of instruction in English

You have to score minimum 550 score in each subject and after equivalency from IBCC it would be very difficult for you to get success on Governmental BDS seat

You have more chance of admission as an overseas student but i think you can also get admission on open merit seat but through Punjab quota. You can contact the website discussed above and register there, they will update you accordingly. The competition is very low in this category. I would strongly recommend that you may apply on open merit after appearing in ETEA exam of KPK only and that too through the counseling company of these colleges. They don’t charge anything and just to improve their marketing effort statistics, would also guide you till admission confirmation

Dr Anjum Naz

Thanks for your query,  You have been a science student and have completed your studies So i think there is no need to worry about career now as you have done enough

Politics is not an easy task and one year for the preparation of CSS is not sufficient time

You need to start practice ,but the most important thing is to follow your instinct and do which makes you happy

good luck for your future

Maha Khalid

If you are already a doctor why not pursue a career as a doctor. If you want to take your css exam. You can do that as there is no harm, but it does not mean you take it for entering politics. Entering politics requires a whole lot more. In Pakistan it is mostly the right kind of contacts to become a member of assembly first and it’s a long procedure not for an ordinary person.

If you want to pursue a career in journalism then it is best to enroll into a bachelors as well as a master’s degree for mass comm.

Good luck.

Zubair Bajwa

Congratulations! after your house job now you are a full doctor. SORRY after 6 years of hard learning you are confused about your career???

Medical students who want to attempt CSS start after 2nd year as it is considered BSc and they get somewhere at the end of MBBS. If you thinking to start now when one year is left, its way late.

Now after house job you should concentrate on the field of specialising that you find your interest in. Start early planning and executing this time.

Political Office holders are keepers of faith and trust of their constituency that they represent. Doctors also enjoy this privilege when they wear a white coat; it gives you more responsibility to keep your patient’s trust as you know more about his illness than him; and he will not spare any expense or effort to follow your instructions.

In the meanwhile, I’ll recommend you to work with some International NGO (they are always looking for doctors) this will broaden your horizon, open new avenues and give you adventure to come out of this boredom.

 Best wishes,

Rakhshanda Khan

They are right every thing depends on you:) You have finished your BDS and your have no plans to practice? you like Politics, so you can join union( students/professional) Try to get field experience. You could finish your M.Sc or degree in Journalism as part time/ pvt students or in evening.

I have no idea about your personality and interests. Do have skills and personality that match with the job requirements you want to pursue? If not do not waste your time, money and hard work. Your age is also a barrier for CSS (you have clear understanding) Think what I have said.

Saima Tabbasum

Good Day,
As per my understanding  from the details below, looks like that although you are a qualified BDS and have already finished your house job, you are not at all interested in continuing with the same profession. I  can’t  make it out  clearly what made you to study Dentistry when you had  a keen interest in social sciences and politics????????????????????

Well, at this point of time with your current situation, I will advise you that if you are really keen and have a serious determination for building a career in civil services and  politics, go ahead for CSS exam. Don’t even think about failure and second chance. We live in a world of competition where getting even a single chance is a blessing. May God forbid if you can’t go through you will be having the option to do Masters in Political science, International affairs or journalism to follow up on your field of interest.
Although Dentistry is also a vast field and you can have a successful career if you explore better opportunities but in your case advising you the same will be just repetition of the same mistake you made 6 years back while selecting your career as you don’t seem happy with it and still looking forward to other fields.

I wish you very best of luck and will look forward  to see a successful professional in coming  few years .

Imran Ismail

Assalam o Allakum
Thank you for email. Sure you can avail your last chance for CSS. Other wise you should join some hospital or further cources and get better chance for abroad where you know you can get good job after getting exam and than you can get license for job. USA and Canada is best.

All the best wishes

Hammad Siddiqui
